Maine was initially a part of Massachusetts and in 1752, our first Masonic lodge was formed under their aegis. We were created as an independent state in June, 1820. At that same time, the Grand Lodge of Masons in Maine was formed, incorporated by the state, with the Governor, William King, serving as Grand Master. From the 31 lodges which had been part of Massachusetts, we now have 185 lodges covering the entire state. For those doing research, a list of lodges showing their precedence can be found here.
