Supporting those who serve!

Veterans Day 2006

Maine Masons have served honorably in times of war and in times of peace. Our country's history recalls the feats of Commodore Edward Preble and his importance in creating today's Navy, of General Henry Knox whose heroic trek to Ticonderoga and subsequent delivery of cannon helped turn the tide of the Revolution, of General Joshua Chamberlain who not only was instrumental in winning of a critical Civil War battle but whose humanity at the time of the South's surrender was pivotal in the healing process, and of so many, many others. While some names are immortalized, others served with honor and distinction in times of war and peace. We honor them all - Mason and non-Mason alike - for their service.

Right now, there are hundreds of Maine Masons serving our country through service on active duty or inactive service with the Guard and Reserve. On this Veterans Day, we recognize their commitment to protecting us.

Masonry's ranks swelled after World War II when many men, recognizing that the fraternal bonds existing amongst Masons were not unlike the comradeship formed through military service, joined our ranks. Today, the 'Generation that saved mankind' is quickly slipping from our midst. In addition, today many young men are fighting terrorism on foreign soil. We honor them all and ask that all Masons in Maine do the same on this very special day.

The Grand Master, MW Gerald S. Leighton, asks that ALL Masons remember our veterans on Veterans Day 2006. If you're not part of ceremonies in your own locality, he welcomes you to join him in his home town of Bangor where he will be applauding our Veterans as they cross over the 'middle bridge' in the parade. He will be there on the Bangor end of the bridge- wearing his apron and jewel - along with the Grand Marshal. You and your family are most welcome to join in seeing this always-excellent parade as it celebrates the service of so many and to cheer the Vets on. In addition, in the Bangor parade you'll see World War II and Korean War veterans with their 'walking sticks' commissioned and donated by Brother Galen Cole to recognize veterans' service. The parade steps off from Brewer at 10:15am.

This year, the Veterans Administration is encouraging all veterans to wear their medals on their left breast to show their service to our country. You can find more information about this here.
