Lodge Open House - October 14, 2006

From the Grand Master:

What an interesting time to be a Freemason! Thanks to the exposure of our Craft in popular books, media and documentaries, a real curiosity has appeared in society concerning our great fraternity. As interest in Freemasonry is increased it becomes our duty to help define who and what we are as a fraternity and not let these media define our purpose for us. Several Grand Jurisdictions have used various techniques to help with this effort and our newly created “Masonic Ambassadors” are hard at work exploring how we here in Maine can do the same. One of the efforts that were successful in the Grand Jurisdiction of Massachusetts was a state wide “open house”. The Grand Master encouraged each lodge to hold an open house on the same date to help introduce Freemasonry at a local level. Our Ambassadors believe that this could be useful project for Maine also and have asked me to encourage each lodge to hold such an event on October 14th. I think it’s a great idea!

Regretably our Grand Lodge does not have the funds available to assist local lodges with advertising this event. From my prospective, this should not keep us from trying to be successful. We ‘Mainiacs’ have always been able to use “Yankee Ingenuity” to accomplish difficult tasks.

So. . . . . . .shown below and available as a download is an announcement that should be shared with lodge members as soon as possible. We need to have their support before anything can be accomplished and the earlier the better. Second, each lodge may have to decide if they would like to advertise in local papers, use flyers or find other means to stir up some interest in their local communities. Third, if your lodge has a Masonic Ambassador that was trained last May make sure to contact him for help. If you lodge does not have an
Ambassador, please contact our Deputy Grand Master and he will insure that one is temporarily attached to you for assistance. And lastly, wouldn’t it be a shame if we did not take advantage of this very special opportunity?

There are no restraints around how this open house should be conducted. The ideas are limitless – free public breakfasts – showing of the movie “National Treasure” – discussion of the “Da Vinci Code” – detailed discussion of the officer’s implements – tours of the lodge hall. . . . . . .well you get the picture!

Make your plans and prepare to execute them!

Fraternally,
    Jerry Leighton, Grand Master
