Grand Lodge Mailing List
Tired of getting e-mails from five different people that are all identical? Tired of not hearing about things until it was too late? Wish you knew what the Grand Master was thinking? Well, Brother: fret no more! We have created an e-mail list for all of us - and we hope that you'll find it useful.
We've started out with a 'General' list that's designed for Maine Masons. During the month, you'll receive messages from the Grand Master and others as appropriate but usually not more than 2-5 during any one month. Sometimes they'll be announcements of events while at other times they will provide motivation and encouragement. You can read the Grand Master's most recent mailing to get a better idea of what the list is all about.
In the coming months, Grand Lodge will expand our use of e-mail communications using a number of different, topical lists. For example, we'll have a list for just for District Deputies, another for those who want to get the latest announcements from the Maine Masonic College, yet another for Lodge Secretaries, and yet another for members of the Masters & Wardens in a given district, as well as several others. When you sign up, be sure to check the option for 'General List' so you won't miss out on those that might pertain to you!
YIKES! 10x's the e-mail....
NO! That won't happen at all because if, for example, a mailing gets sent to three of those constituencies (a mailing to Secretaries, District Deputies, and past GL officers, for example), you'll only get ONE copy even though you're on three different lists. WOW! And if you change your e-mail (and many of us seem to be forced into doing that on a far-too-regular basis) then just one click of the mouse to the link on the bottom of each and every message will enable you to change your address online and thus saving you the hassle of writing notes to dozens of other Masons who have been sending you those 'blanket' messages that seem to always get duplicated.
So who's going to use this?
As we start out, we've taken names from a number of different sources. Mistypings as we entered the addresses or perhaps using an old e-mail, you may not have made it onto the list. If you got any e-mail bearing the Grand Lodge seal in a graphic at the top and coming from <xxx>@mainemason.org, you're on the list already. If you haven't, feel free to sign up right now. If a month passes and you've not received anything, do write to the Webmaster to see what's going on.
General Mailings
The primary mailing list will be a general list, open to all: Mason or non. It is designed for MAINE MASONS. Thus, if you're a Mason who's a member of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire (and NOT Maine), for example, and the Grand Master asks you to send along a list of <whatever>, remember that it DOESN'T APPLY TO YOU! This list - at the risk of being repetitive - is designed for MAINE MASONS!
We won't be sending messages daily but it will be a primary means for the Grand Master to communicate with the Craft and we encourage all Maine Masons to sign up for it.
What to look for
E-mails from the Grand Lodge to date have all had the Grand Lodge seal at the top. If you've received e-mails with this graphic coming from <someone>@mainemason.org, you're all set. There's a link at the bottom of each message you get to edit your profile or change your e-mail address. No need to contact the Webmaster for this: you can do it yourself quite easily and immediately.
Read enough? Want to sign up? Here ya go!
And don't forget: we also have the Maine Masonic Discussion List open to Maine Masons only.
Some technical details
If your ISP is blocking Grand Lodge E-mails
Because we're using a commercial mailing service - Constant Contact - to process these e-mails, some internet service providers reject any such communications as presumed 'SPAM'. If this is the case, you'll need to communicate with them in order to resolve the problem.
The Webmaster has already identified two internet service providers (both Maine-based) and has written to them in order to avoid the blocked messages to their subscribers. However, you may need to contact them directly as well. Here's how:

Email blocking is an unavoidable part of commercial email and affects a very small percentage (an average trackable block rate of less than 3%) of Constant Contact email (see the following details). To see more information on blocking, visit Blocking FAQs.

Next Steps
Step 1
Use another email address
One immediate solution would be to use another email address with an unblocked domain. This change will allow you to receive emails from our Constant Contact account. If you don't have another email address with a different domain, you might want to consider a free email account through Google, Yahoo! or Hotmail.
Step 2
Contact your ISP
You can contact the customer service department of your ISP to request receipt of Constant Contact emails. A letter to your ISP not only relays your dissatisfaction, but also, and most importantly, requests a lift to the block. Below is a sample letter that you may use to send to your ISP. We only ask that you forward your complaint ticket number from the ISP to ops@constantcontact.com. See letters below. You can copy and paste that letter into your e-mail program.

Why Blocked Details
All successful email marketing companies and many major consumer and retail companies find at least some of their email blocked. As ISPs and corporations attempt to reduce the amount of unsolicited commercial email (spam) that their email clients receive, they also block wanted email.
The most common methods of blocking are the use of filters, blocklists, or a combination of both. Most email marketing service providers that do not require "confirmed opt in" find some of their email blocked by filters and blocklists. A Letter For You To Send To Your ISP
The goal of these filters and blocklists is to block spam, or unsolicited commercial email. Many filters are content and complaint rate driven and as a sender, the Grand Lodge tries to avoid sending messages which would look like spam to a filter by choosing our "from:" name, subject line, and message content carefully. Before mailing, we use an "Anti-spam Check:" feature that identifies problem words and phrases before sending our e-mails.
The degree of blocking varies considerably by blocklist. Some block only spam while others are overly aggressive resulting in the blocking of legitimate, requested email. Those that are overly aggressive may block emails from Constant Contact. Fortunately, the most aggressive blockslists are infrequently used.
The letters below will help you work with Constant Contact who will then work with your ISP towards a resolution if more information is required.

To: ISP Customer Support
Subject: Remove Constant Contact Block
Hello. My name is XXXX and I have been a customer of your services since XXXX. I understand that you employ filters and/or blacklists to protect customers like myself from unsolicited email; however, this has made it impossible for me to receive newsletters, announcements, and promotions that I have requested. I value these communications and would like to receive them using this email address.
The sender of these emails uses an email marketing service called Constant Contact. Constant Contact is not an open relay and has strict anti-spam policies in place. Because your filters block emails from Constant Contact I am unable to receive these communications.
I ask that you please help me determine why these emails are being blocked. For further information about Constant Contact or to request more information from them such as log files, the Ops team can be reached at - 781.472.8103 or ops@constantcontact.com.
