Finding a Sponsor

It's not as hard as you think...

Sometimes potential applicants get stymied at this point in the process: truly, there's no need.

Is a relative a Mason? Ask them if they'll sponsor you. They'll always be pleased to help.

What about a friend or co-worker? Look around for decals on cars at school or work and you might readily find someone you know who'll get you started. We look to you to show some initiative in this and truly, if joining Freemasonry is something you want to do, this won't be difficult at all. Don't just throw up your hands and say, "I don't know anyone!" In most cases, that's really not true

However, there are those individuals who truly don't know a soul who is a Mason - and can't find one even after looking around. If that's the case, contact the lodge Secretary by phone or email and explain that you're interested in joining. He'll arrange for you to meet a couple of members of the lodge who will learn about you and answer any questions you have. When they're comfortable doing so, they will become your sponsors. Alternatively, you can go to the lodge on a night they're meeting. Arrive about 45 minutes early and someone will make arrangements to speak briefly to set up a time when a more liesurely discussion can be held. Please understand that there's a lot going on just before a meeting so your time there will be, of necessity, brief. It will, however, afford you an opportunity to see members face-to-face and begin the process of getting to know one another.

Another option is to attend a Masonic event such as an Open House, public installation of officers, 'Friendship Night', public supper, or any other event. Again, the press of activities surrounding the event may cause the discussion to be brief but will at least provide a direct contact with whom you can follow up.

A great responsibility

Every Mason is pleased and proud when someone he knows wants to become a member. However, the lodge as well as the organization as a whole is relying completely on the sponsor to assure us that you are a man of good character and meet the requirements of membership. An Investigating Committee will be appointed to examine this further as well. Once you become a Mason, we will be bound together as Brothers from then on.

Just as you would not open your house to a stranger, so too we will not open our lodge with its friendship and fellowship to someone in whom we cannot have absolute faith and trust. We rely on the fidelity of our Brothers to only sponsor those who will be a credit to the fraternity. If you've read this far, you may well be that person!
