A more complete explanation

We expect that any applicant will be of good moral character, with no felony convictions, upright in their behavior. Regardless of any prior or current family membership (or not), each man is considered on his own merit by the lodge to whom he submits his petition. Requirements as to age and residence are will not be waived.

Belief in a Supreme Being is an absolute requirement to become a Freemason in a regular/recognized Masonic lodge and to share the fraternity and fellowship of Freemasons around the world. We require no specific affirmation of creed or dogma but simply an unequivocal affirmative answer to the question, "Do you believe in a Supreme Being?" Your answer being yes, no other questions about your faith or belief are asked and no other discussion is necessary.

Two Masons will need to sign your petition as your sponsor. There's more information about that here. Most lodges require that one of the two be a member of that lodge although some require that both be members. Check with the lodge you intend to petition about this to be sure.

Freemasonry, while providing innumerable public and private charity services, is NOT in and of itself a charity. Accordingly, those seeking membership must clearly understand that we are neither an insurance nor welfare program. As a Mason, you will regularly be called upon to assist with your time and money to further the charitable causes supported by your lodge. Because of this, you should be able to fully and completely support yourself and those who depend upon you, both now and in the future. We realize that circumstances can change, bringing unforeseen difficulties. However, at the time when you join, you should have sufficient funds so that membership will not bring hardship to you or your family.

Is there something we haven't addressed here? If so, we encourage you to first talk with your sponsor or to the Secretary of the Lodge to whom you propose to submit your petition. If those sources are not available, you can contact the Grand Lodge Webmaster who will ensure your request is passed to the appropriate party for response. PLEASE REMEMBER: this applies to those who are residents of Maine seeking membership in a Maine Masonic Lodge. If you do not meet this criteria, please refer to the website of the state/province or country (if overseas) where you are seeking membership.

A brief warning

Freemasonry is an initiatory experience that requires one's physical presence. You cannot become a Mason online and any such claims indicate that you are victim of an internet scam. Please be careful!
