Newsletter from the Grand Secretary
Hollis G. Dixon, Grand Secretary
January 2011
MESSAGE FOR THE MASTER:
Generally, I consider this Newsletter to be directed to the Secretaries of our lodges. However, this message is intended for the Worshipful Masters. It has become apparent that a number of lodges are doing degree work and not including the lectures that are intended to be a part of that degree. In those cases it is understood that the lecture will be given at a later date. Often we hear that this is done because the Master of the lodge doesn't want the meeting to run too late into the evening. This practice is unacceptable.
The lecture is an essential part of the degree which combines our operative and speculative heritage. The general practice should be to do the two parts together. A dispensation to postpone the lecture should only be granted for a good cause, such as a planned Fourth Night program. It should be obtained in advance and the delay granted should be for a specific date. After the lecture has been given, the Master of the lodge should certify to the Grand Secretary that it was done within the allotted time as specified in the dispensation. All of speculative Masonry is contained in the lectures. If we skip or downgrade the lectures we have diminished Masonry.
THE BOOK OF CONSTITUTIONS:
This is the time of year when most lodges are installing new officers for the coming Masonic year. As the new Master of your lodge, you should be sure to remember these words that were spoken when you were installed:
"The Book of Constitutions you are to search at all times. Cause it to be read in your lodge, that none may pretend ignorance of its requirements."
You may want to consider occasionally calling on one of your officers to read a section from the Constitution at a Stated Communication. This practice can generate discussions, make your meetings interesting and educate the Brethren at the same time.
Annual Returns: [For all Lodge Secretaries]
As you are aware, the Annual Returns are due as of February 1, 2011. You should have recently received one set of the Annual Return Forms. If you have not received the forms, please contact the Grand Secretary's office right away. Once you have completed the forms you should submit them with the Abstract and a check in the amount necessary to cover your per capita tax, assessments and insurance. Should you need assistance with the forms, please call the Grand Lodge office and speak with Corey. She processes these forms and she will do everything she can to assist you with that process.
Once your Return has been reviewed, you will receive a copy containing any corrections that have been made to it. It will have been signed by the Grand Treasurer.
Fraternally submitted,
Hollis G. Dixon
Grand Secretary
